Qingdao- Report on our school trip Essay

The trip to Qingdao was perhaps the most successful I had been to and one the students all expressed satisfaction with, despite the numerous problems given the rushed nature of the trip and the disastrous first day spent at the airport. I felt that this was more due to the fact that we only had to spend three days. and anything more in such a small coastal resort would have stretched students’ patience to breaking point. Over 80% of the students were of the opinion that this trip â€Å"- was more organised† which, given the fact it had been completely unplanned and students had been unprepared (wearing clothes suited for the beach in Hainan and not for three days of heavy rain), is remarkable. One student did later email me to offer his opinion that â€Å"the last minute change to Qing Dao made the trip much less pleasant† although of those asked, nearly all agreed that there had been â€Å"good last minute planning.† Many expressed amazement that there had been no contingency plan given the fact most knew of the threat of a hurricane the week before. It was also a matter of concern that whereas we were told not to make such a trip due to the danger, the Chinese section by 17.00 were still waiting for an aeroplane to that very location. Students also felt that the â€Å"hotels were better than last year†, although at the same time expressed dissatisfaction with them and the first hotel in particular. Personally I felt the hotels were satisfactory, although the first one provided food that was universally disliked, with students using adjectives â€Å"bad† and â€Å"horrible† to describe it. The breakfast we had on that first morning certainly did not help to motivate the students. As a result of the singular nature of this trip, many recommendations and comments simply would not valid for the next such trip. For example, the lack of preparedness both in the itinerary and provisions for students (food and clothing) was simply due to the timing. I do wish to offer a recommendation that was made last year and judiciously ignored; that of tour guides. I was shocked to see that the tour group responsible for our disastrous trip to Chengdu last year (reminder: forcing students to endure 28 hours on a train, and an entire day on a bus to have less than an hour to visit a museum) was AGAIN put in charge of this one. I can only conclude that this was due to economic considerations, this group no doubt being the  cheapest. However, again I wish to ask the school to reconsider using such groups which to my mind are only motivated by money, have no concern about engaging students, and offer more obstacles than solutions in the obscene belief that they, and not the people paying them, are in charge. To be told they we are not welcome to change our itinerary without their agreement is deeply offensive to me. As one student informed me, ISB has done away with such groups, suggesting Never, EVER use a Chinese tour guide. They cut deals with restaurants and tourist traps and take you places that seem like huge Chinese amusement parks. You can’t get a decent tour there because the Chinese don’t really value what we value or think things are cool that we think are cool. For example, no one in China thought that the pictures I took were of any value. Their take is, â€Å"why would he want to take a picture of that alley or that market or that man; why doesn’t he take a picture of the Pearl Tower?† Tours these groups ‘organise’ are done so without any apparent thought given to the participants, in our case 15-16 year old teenagers most of whom are laowei. An incompetent guide with poor language abilities and an inability to engage the attention of teenagers all too often sacrifices what could be a golden opportunity for real bonding between students and staff. Indeed, these tours are run to make money, not to educate and encourage the development of students. Hence time is spent travelling to factories and markets to gain money for the guide, breeding resentment between students who are forced to waste their time travelling to and staying in such areas. Another student told me that tour group leaders are somehow required to take their tour groups to at least one market a day, even for Chinese tour groups that she had been on. She said the tour group leaders get a percentage from the merchants on what was spent by the group. Our students are a cynical, world-weary bunch for the most part and see this for the exploitation that it is. Specific problems were encountered at the airport, where two students had managed to organise a 14.00 flight to Qingdao only to have the tour organisers (neither of whom seem to be in charge) tell us to wait until  after lunch, only after which an attempt was made to arrange a flight four hours later. Upon arrival and for the duration of the trip, both tour organiser and the local guide argued between themselves in front of us which did nothing for morale or to reassure us. The most striking example during this trip that illustrates the problems of relying on tour guides was when we had visited the Taiqing Temple in southeast of Laoshan Mountain. Like so many other ‘historical’ sights in China, such places we are taken to are new, tour-group friendly replicas and frankly uninteresting. It is the largest and the oldest Taoist temple in China but, instead of discussing the historical significance of the site, the guide spoke only of simplistic ideas in Daoism and repeated the usual mantra â€Å"this stone looks like this and therefore is called the†¦.† As a result students paid no attention and began wondering off. Students were left without any appreciation or insight into what they had seen, and Paul was left with little time for his planned lesson with his students on Laoshan Mountain that had been completely overrun by tours so as to have been useless. What had been most important to me to visit was the German legation area as I actually teach this part of history to my class. Instead of seeing such architecture, we went only to the German governor’s house where no attempt was made by the guide to explain anything apart from dwelling on the fact that Mao had spent a month there as a guest in the 1950s. As one student remarked upon arriving back in Beijing, â€Å"the tour guides were annoying and knew little.† Of course we visited the Tsingtao Beer Museum, China’s first such facility. So quickly and dispassionately did the guide lead us through that I myself missed most of what was said and understood nothing about the history and process involved. I ended up feeling sorry for the chemistry teacher for whom this tour was especially important. The guides encouraged students to drink at the end of this tour, actually arguing with me in front of them to  let them drink pitchers of beer after I had limited each student to a glass. This I found unacceptable behaviour and unforgivable as it was I, not them, who would be left responsible and put under account once we returned. The last place we visited was the Chinese Naval Museum, which is apparently China’s largest. The main exhibits are souvenirs of Chinese navy history and de-commissioned Chinese navy weapons, warships and submarines including the destroyers used in the Second World War. I was especially bitter as an history teacher not having a guide to walk us through these remarkable exhibits but left students on their own to wander ignorantly. Some of us did venture onto a destroyer (by now it was raining heavily and we were wearing clothes for Hainan) but again, it was not until after the trip I discovered the importance of such a Soviet-built ship, which had actually shot down an American plane. As I am currently teaching this stage in history to this very class of IB1 students, I consider it to have been a tremendously wasted opportunity. Qingdao is famous for its rich historical and cultural resources and yet we saw little. I would recommend the next trip to Qingdao having students visit The Catholic church which is the largest of its kind in Qingdao. It is a Gothic style church designed by German architect Alfred Frederic Pohl and completed in 1934. This would help students gain greater cultural awareness as is the IB’s mission. Another church would have been the Lutheran, a Byzantium-style church completed in 1910, which was the first facility constructed by German settlers in Qingdao. I doubt the majority of our students have ever seen a Lutheran church before. Students next time could also visit the television tower on Mt. Xinhaoshan Park with its revolving top floor where they could view the coastal scenery and visit the exhibition of human communication history. This would have been far more useful to our students than simply depositing them on a forlorn beach for two hours. Also on this site is a park where two pavilions has been constructed overlooking the beaches. Besides the German legacy, Qingdao is useful for other cultural sites from Russian to Japanese buildings. Next time I would recommend students go past the Huashi Building, which was designed by a Russian architect and completed in 1932.The building incorporates Greek and Roman as well as Gothic architectural styles and is believed to be a typical castle construction combing Western architectural arts. Such a building cannot be seen in Beijing. I had wanted to take students to Xiaoqingdao lsle because in 1890German colonists erected a beacon to assist navigation before he Sino-Japanese war, but was not allowed by the tour guide due to fears about making the short journey by boat. Instead we spent another day on the shore. We had never been taken to Zhanqiao Pier, which is the symbol of Qingdao (as I know from the Tsingtao beer logo) and which had originally been completed in 1891 to be used as a dock and expanded by German colonists in 1897.At the end of there is a traditional two-story Chinese style pavilion, Huilan’ge with overhanging eaves and an octagon roof. Finally I think that students should also be taken to Qingdao Underwater World with its three sections of an intertidal zone, an underwater tunnel and a 4-story underground aquarium displaying marine species and marine science, if only for something to break the monotony. Perhaps the best way to end this necessarily brief report would be to allow the students themselves express their views. When asked at the end of the trip what the students felt, they all agreed that the likes: -â€Å"freedom to do what we wanted.† Admittedly this had been limited given the weather; such freedom too did not mean that they had not been under supervision throughout. -â€Å"coolness of the teachers.† I feel we all worked together very well as a  group. -â€Å"the fact that the opinions of students mattered.† Again, in my experience this has always been the case in the trips I had been to, although perhaps students were encouraged to help organise everything from alternative flights to beach activities and therefore felt particularly valued. -† was more organised.† â€Å"enjoyed being able to â€Å"hang out† with friends† -â€Å"enjoyed the sea/beach.† † the beach, teachers, seafood was good.† â€Å"got to know classmates much better.† They disliked: -â€Å"the curfew.† This is a strange point to me as it was only truly enforced the first night; on other nights teachers stayed up with them and played cards or Playstation. -â€Å"the food.† As always, we had to endure the same monotonous hotel food. Again, when breakfast is poor as was the case on the first day, it makes a difference to the morale of the students for the rest of the day). One Muslim student suffered the first dinner despite the guides knowing her restrictions. -â€Å"the tour guides.† I suggest we do as ISB does and plan such trips 5-6 months in advance, and have students come up with their own itinerary. Guides should be there to book hotels and buses and provide knowledgeable advice (not propaganda); they serve to assist teachers, not override and replace them. -† Lao Shan and the first hotel were horrible.† â€Å"12 hours at the airport was not fun at all.† Nevertheless, they were informed and asked for their opinions and advice throughout, so it was manageable. -† Wanted more beach activities and more fun activities†. This was a problem simply given the weather. â€Å"Hotels could have been better.† For this main point I perhaps should add that many felt embittered that they had replaced 4 star hotels in Hainan with swimming pools and the like for cheaper 3 star hotels in Qingdao with absolutely no facilities at all; not even a ping pong table. Nevertheless, the cost throughout was the same as it would have been for a week in Hainan.

Spikes Volleyball Court

1) Perform a Business Sizeup Spike’s Indoor Beach Volleyball and Rock Climbing Inc. caters to a niche market in the Canadian sports industry. As there were no indoor beach volleyball courts in Canada, Spikes faced little competition. The volleyball crazed locality of London, Ontario provided the perfect geographical location for the operations of Spikes. In addition to indoor beach volleyball courts, Spikes had also added an indoor rock climbing wall, a small restaurant with a bar, and had also upgraded the lighting, heating system, computer servers and had added a big-screen television in the lounge area.Spikes did face some competition in the rock-climbing wall division as there were 2 other competitors in the vicinity who offered similar services at comparable rates. Holistically speaking, the business was doing immensely well and faced little or no environmental threat apart from the fact that the premises was not owned by the business itself. It was leased from another pe rson and was constantly at risk of zoning laws banning the establishment, as it was labeled as a high intensity residential area.This meant that the lease owner could cancel Spikes lease at any reasonable notice and construct high-rise apartment buildings in its place however Spikes reasoned that since there was no pressure from the neighborhood he would not face too much risk in this regard. As it is, the cost of a potential lease cancellation cannot be quantified and will affect the going concern of the business. Apart from that the business is in a very healthy condition, having around 130 regular teams per season that feed its main operations i. e. olleyball and Spikes has engineered various complementary services to squeeze more revenue out of its main operations which is mainly the restaurant bar and rock-climbing wall. 2) Analyze the expansion qualitatively. The main aim of Misener was to encourage more people to stay after volleyball matches and games via the outdoor patio. Additionally the outdoor patio would be directly over the new outdoor beach volleyball court hence would create an area for the audience to sit, enjoy a match along with some drinks and refreshments which eventually will increase revenues and popularity.Having a 200 person capacity will provide enough room for spectators to enjoy a match without any congestion. Additionally, Misener has estimated that there will be 95 good weather days out of 120 days per season during which the patio can be open which implies an efficiency of around 80%. Having an extra court meant that four matches can be conducted per day meaning that Spikes can cater to around 8 more teams on a daily basis which will increase their operating revenues.The downfall of constructing this patio was that Misener was already facing a risk of his lease being cancelled and if the business were to construct an outdoor patio, residential complaints might increase as it will cause noise disturbance as well as littering from the patio. Spikes was in no position to face residential complaints as it could push his lease towards cancellation and he would have to locate another suitable premises to operate from which could essentially destroy his business.Lastly, the estimates provided by Misener are very optimistic and would require analysis from different projections to ensure that the expansion does remain viable in all possible scenarios. 3) List all the cash flows associated with the expansion, and classify them as relevant (cash, future and different), recurring or one-time costs. What is the return on investment?What is the payback period? In the attached file, there are calculations of relevant cash flows and their diff erent impacts on the expansion analysis. The capital expenditure of the first year comes out to be about $43,500 which is financed via a 6% loan with monthly payments. Amortization of $9,300 per year will be charged to depreciate the capital expenditure which yields a tax shield (20% tax) of $1,860 annually. The per month interest payment comes out to be $1,927. 95 and the entire loan will be paid off in two years.As a result, the annual interest tax shield comes out to be $4,627. 1 for the two years during which the loan is active. The first incremental revenue will come from 8 additional teams playing per day in the new outdoor court. Charging a per season fee of $650 per team, the total increment in revenue from increased teams is calculated to be $15,600 per year. According to Misener, due to the rooftop patio, liquor sales will increase to $6000 a day implying a $3000 revenue increase per day. Assuming 95 days in a season of 120 days during which the patio will be open and acti ve.As there are 3 seasons in a year the total incremental revenue comes out to be about $427,500 of profit per year. Applying similar calculations to the increase in food sales of $1000 per day yields Spikes additional profit of $99,750 per year. As these are profits before taxes, the company will need to pay taxes which are a cash outflow. Assuming a 20% tax rate, the annual tax payable from incremental revenue comes out to be $108,570. There will be some incremental operating expenses which are a direct consequence of running the patio.Firstly 2 additional servers will be hired for 8 hours a day at $8. 5 per hour and another bartender will be hired for 8 hours a day at $10 per hour. This comes out to about $61,560 per year after considering the 95 operating days per season assumption. Maintenance and Utilities will be paid at $500 a month and $200 a month which yields $8,400 for the whole year. Insurance will increase by 10% per year which, after considering last year’s ins urance of $12,225, comes out to be $1222. 5.The bar will have to keep inventory of Liquor and food of 5 days and will pay back the suppliers in 10 days which will decrease our net working capital by $10,750 (calculations in excel). Totaling the above will yield us the differential annual cash flows for the expansion. The cost of equity for Spikes, after searching through comparable entities, comes out to be about 15%. The ratio of debt to value of the expansion is calculated to be 10. 26% which yields equity to value ratio of 89. 74%.The cost of debt is 6% as stated earlier; after plugging these values into the formula for weighted average cost of capital, the WACC comes out to be 14. 08%. Using the above calculated weighted average cost of capital, the terminal value of cash flows for the expansion calculated is $2,592,710. 76. As a result, cash flows for the entire life of the project are calculated and the NPV of the project comes out to be $2,647,878. 40 indicating the expansion will create value of over $2 million. The payback period is less than a year, around 34 days as incremental revenues are vast and the initial outlay is only $43,500.The return on investment, more commonly known as internal rate of return or IRR, comes out to be 872%. 5) As Earl Misener, would you go ahead with the expansion? Earl Misener should not go only by the numbers which seem too good to be true. In fact, they are too good to be true as one critical factor has not been quantified i. e. the potential risk of losing the lease due to the expansion. If Misener loses the lease then not only will the expansion be redundant, he will have to locate his business elsewhere which for a business like Spikes will spell certain death.The location is gold as it is situated away from competitors who lower competitive risk and is located near residential areas making it easier for his customers to commute to Spikes. As Earl Misener, he should analyze his fall-back plans and strategies on how to ensure the lease does not get cancelled. If possible, Earl should also try to buy the premises instead of relying on a lease. In my opinion, it is too soon to expand and Earl should solve the lease problem before expanding.

Genetically modified organism Essay

Genetically engineered food is an epidemic all around the world. There are factors that make these types of foods undesirable for many reasons. Public opinions on how genetically engineered foods will effect the consumer market and farmers cannot afford the new seeds that are genetically altered. There are many cons of genetically engineered food that have long term and short term risks. Some risks have been found by scientists while other risks are still unknown and will remain so unless a researcher tests for them. These foods have become very common in America as well as other countries. Almost every grocery store in the United States carries a wide array of food that has been genetically modified. Most of the genetically engineered foods in markets are not labeled to tell consumers they were altered in any way. Environmental risks are also a concern for genetically engineered food. Different animals, including farm animals or insects can be harmed from genetically engineered food. Genetically engineered food has negative effects on the human population. Genetically engineered food was first introduced into society in the early 1990’s. Many people today do not know what kind of extensive research and development goes into making these types of foods. Sharon Palmer, a reporter, writes that genetic engineering is either â€Å"Doomsday tech† or â€Å"biotechnology for the future† (Palmer 1). The process of altering an organism completely changes the original organism and transforms it into something new. This new way of altering an organism’s genetic makeup bypasses common breeding methods used by scientists (Genetically Modified Foods 1). The process of creating genetically altered food usually involves â€Å"identifying the genes governing a desirable characteristic in one organism, and inserting them into another in the expectation that the trait will be transferred† (Genetically Modified Foods 1). Sometimes the process of creating these organisms does not work so scientists have to do the process over again until they get a transformed organism. In 1973 scientists were able to achieve using another organism as a vector which essentially was the beginning of the development of genetically engineered foods. Although genetically engineered foods were not fully introduced until the early 1990s, they were in the process of becoming what society knows today. Newer techniques have been introduced that make it easier for gene insertion. This new method is the use of DNA bullets where â€Å"microscopic metal beads can be coated with DNA fragments, and then â€Å"fired† from a miniature gun into the host cell, where DNA may integrate into the genome† (Genetically Modified Foods 1). A few of the genetically engineered foods are soybeans, corn, canola, cotton, squash and papaya (Palmer 1). There are many other foods that people see on the shelves in grocery stores that may be genetically altered but these are some main ones. Statistics show that â€Å"an estimated 70 to 75 percent of all processed foods in U. S.grocery stores probably contain ingredients from GE plants† (Palmer 6). Many foods have been genetically altered to make them â€Å"better† or resistant to herbicides. Despite the fact that scientists consider these foods to be revolutionary there are hidden consequences to the development of such organisms. The public opinion on genetically engineered food is that it is not a good improvement. Many citizens believe that the introduction of altered foods is going to have negative side effects on everything. People feel that genetically engineered foods should not be put on the market until they have had adequate testing (Current Issues 3). Many of the alterations done to food have not had extensive research conducted to find harmful effects that they might have on humans and animals. Any research that had been done usually had negative effects but scientists found a way to â€Å"throw out† the research so that it would not go against genetically engineered food. Andrew Simms states that the â€Å"evidence of harm is not evidence of the absence of harm† (Simms 1). In Simm’s article he describes how consumers do not need genetically modified food. Scientists brought genetically engineered foods into the market and advertised them as a way to help the world. Different techniques can be used to approach the issue of world hunger. Introducing these foods to third world countries can only harm them not help them. There is a high cost of development for making genetically engineered foods. Also there is a monopoly involved with these foods. There are only a few corporations in the United States that are developing genetically altered seeds. This in turn drives up the price of the seed making it more expensive and poor farmers cannot afford to buy them (Current Issues 3). Farmers have lost billions of dollars because foreign buyers do not want to buy genetically engineered foods (Kupfer 1). Many states have passed legislation against having genetically modified foods. States do not think that genetically engineered foods can help anything except make things worse (Kupfer 2). Foods are altered to have different traits that would normally take a few generations to make but with genetically engineering their DNA scientists are able to do a lot more. Scientist use genetic engineering to make crops or animals drought tolerant and be able to tolerate pests. Consumers do not want crops that are mutations. They want natural crops and animals. Other public opinions on worldwide hunger are that GM crops will not change it. â€Å"People go hungry because they’re either poor, powerless, both, or have no land to grow food on† (Simms 2). Public opinion on genetically engineered food is that they do not want it. Many factors have led people to choose not to accept genetically engineered foods into their lives. Genetically engineered food effects everything in a negative way. There are cons to the development and introduction of genetically engineered foods into civilization. There are many risks involved with these types of foods that are unknown to the public. Scientists try to cover up the experiments they had on genetically altered foods because they had negative outcomes. In one study scientists fed corn to rats and then checked the rats’ livers and kidneys, particularly males, and the study revealed adverse effects. In another study conducted on GM foods many of the mice that ate the food developed health problems or even died during the experiment (Current Issues 4). The introduction of genetically engineered foods has been linked to the rising levels of food allergies in the United States. Genetically modified foods can effect organic foods if they are processed in the same place. Allergic reactions are greater since genetically engineered foods have been introduced (Smith 1). There are many environmental concerns as well. Although long term impact is unknown many researchers can conclude some of the negative side effects. A few difficulties have already developed. Plants can cross-pollinate with other plants around them which may seem like a great thing but it is not. Some plants are engineered to be pest resistant which seems good but in all actuality those plants can cross-pollinate with the weeds around them which in turn makes the weeds stronger and become more resistant to herbicides. The cross-pollination of plants creates a problem for farmers who then have to spend additional money to buy more herbicide to kill new weeds (Current Issues 3). Another common modification is adding a gene called Bacillus thuringiensis which is a bacterium that helps that plant develop poison that kills pests such as bollworms and stem borers. This seemed like a good modification by scientists but in fact the plant emits these toxins into the environment and it is deadly to all insects, not just the pests. Reports have been shown that these toxins from the crops also killed a large amount of butterflies (Current Issues 1). U. S. Government does not require reviews on genetically engineered foods. Genetically altered foods are not FDA regulated either. Foods are being modified without having adequate testing and then put on grocery shelves. People are eating food that they do not know whether or not it is safe. There are many other potential concerns with genetic engineering like an organisms genetic makeup, anti-nutrients, viral DNA, antibiotic resistant genes, absorbing genes, and allergic responses. Many genetically altered foods have been used as feed for animals as well. These animals have shown effects on body growth, changes in blood, kidney, pancreas, liver, erosion and necrosis of the gastrointestinal tract, and alterations in reproduction, development and mortality (Palmer 6). There are many unknown risks of genetically engineered foods. Unknown long term health risks have not been identified and cannot be identified until researchers conduct more research. Genetically modified foods are not something people should rely on in the future as their base food. There are risks today and also many other unknown risks. Genetically engineered food is a hazard to the human population. This creation was introduced to try and stop world hunger, make food cheaper to buy and many other reasons. These issues have not changed because of the introduction of genetically engineered food. The effects these types of foods have on humans and even animals can be harmful. Research shows that there are long term risks involved with genetically engineered foods. Potential cancers, diseases, environmental changes, and possibly a rising cost in food are all negative factors of genetically engineered food. There are various causes of climate change both natural and human. Some of the natural causes may include volcanic activity and solar output. It does not only affect what we see on the surface but also affects the creatures that live in the ocean including fish and other animals. Water bodies around the world have also been affected by climate change. Many of these water bodies are used for providing drinking water for both people and animals and the water is also used in industries and agriculture. This enables people to live a healthy life, have food and run businesses with the availability of electricity. The effects of climate change on these water bodies will have severe consequences which are already being experienced. Asian American Studies - Essay Example The Chinese were one of the first Asians to migrate to the U.S. Although only a few Chinese lived in Hawaii in the early 19th century, a large number of Chinese came to Hawaii and inland in the 1840s. The Chinese relocates to the United States for various reasons. Some were looking for refuge from revolts and wars in the mid-19th century (Ling 21).Others were looking for a greener pasture in terms of jobs. The first Chinese immigrants were perhaps laborers. Huge numbers of them migrated to the U.S. as skilled laborers when the fast growth of the West required cheap labor. Some of the Chinese were also attracted by the likelihood of riches. Majority of the Chinese immigrants in the 19th century were males. They dreamt of earning a decent income in the U.S. and afterward going back to China eventually. Married women stayed in China to take care of domestic duties like caring for their children and the parents of their husbands. Moreover, Chinese in cities were mostly working in the ser vice industry. Chinese in the urban neighborhoods were very secluded from mainstream U.S. A large number of Chinese American was raised speaking only their own native language and seldom socializing with Whites. Chinese immigrants were eventually hired in other industries such as mining, construction, etc. On the other hand, just like the Chinese, the earliest Japanese immigrant arrived in the U.S. in the 19th century. Also, similar to the Chinese, they arrived as peasants; but, not like the Chinese, many Japanese settlers became plantation laborers in Hawaii. Inland, a large number of Japanese who were originally hired as agricultural laborers eventually became independent, entrepreneurial farmers and traders. In urban areas, they built small communities where they may interact and help each other, speak their mother tongue, and eat accustomed food (Min 10). After Japanese men had secured themselves in the U.S., they get their wives from Japan, and their wives helped them in farms and businesses. Japanese migrated to the United States to live and raise families. On the other hand, a small number of Filipinos settled in the U.S. prior to the turn of the 20th century. Majority of early Filipino settlers after 1898 were already American citizens, the period that the U.S. gained the Philippines at the end of the Spanish-American War (Min 12). Filipino immigrants were looking for work in Hawaiian plantations and in the mainland. They also worked as service or domestic workers. In the early 20th century, a large number of Filipino laborers formed labor unions, but their attempts to acquire wage raise were countered with aggression by their employers and White colleagues who did not want any competition. More open to intermarriage than other Asian Americans, particularly Japanese and Chinese, Filipino males also inflamed racial violence and resentment by marrying White females. Since many Filipinos worked in the agricultural sector and plantations, they did not form enclaves in the cities (Ling 94). Because of their geographical distribution and their tendency to intermarry, Filipino immigrants eventually became more integrated in the United States than other Asian Americans.
